PHP has the ability to connect and manipulate databases. The most popular database system that is used with PHP is MySQL. MySQL is a open source database system and comes with the WAMP Server/XAMPP server software.

'My' is the daughter’s name of the MySQL’s founder, Monty Widenius. The name of MySQL is the combination of Monty Widenius daughter’s name 'My' and 'SQL', 'MySQL'.

MySQL is free and open-source software. MySQL was owned and sponsored by the Swedish company MySQL AB, which was bought by Sun Microsystems (now Oracle Corporation) in 2010.

MySQL is written in C and C++. Its SQL parser is written in yacc. MySQL works on many system platforms including Linux, macOS, Microsoft Windows, etc.

Personal life: Widenius lives in Finland. Widenius has three children – My, Max, and Maria – who inspired the names for MySQL, MaxDB, and MariaDB.
