Keywords in SEO

Keyword: In SEO, a Keyword is a term that is used to match with the query a person enters into a search engine to find specific information.

Keyword Frequency: This is calculated as how often does a keyword appear in a website title or description. You do not want to go overboard with frequency, however, since on some search engines if you repeat a word too many times, you will be penalized for "spamming" or keyword stuffing.

Keyword Weight: It refers to the number of keywords appearing on your web page compared to the total number of words appearing on that same page.

Placing a keyword on a page is very important. For example, in most engines, placing the keywords in the title of the page or in the heading tags will give it more relevancy. The best place to put keywords is:

  • Keywords in the <title> tag.
  • Keywords in the <meta name="description">.
  • Keywords in the <meta name="keyword">
  • Keywords in <h1> or other Heading tags.
  • Keywords in the <a href="">Keywords</a> link tags.
  • Keywords in the body content.
  • Keywords in alt attribute.

Keyword Phrase: A keyword phrase is generally two or more words that are used by advertisers in search engine optimization, or by visitors who are using search engines in a desire to find information based on that particular phrase. Keyword phrases that are used in Meta data are no longer frequently used by search engines to index pages that have to do with that particular topic. Major search engines such as Google no longer look for keyword phrases in the Meta data, and are more apt to use the information within the actual text of the web page. Listing the keyword phrases in the Meta data does not do any harm though, but is completely up to the website to whether they will use keyword phrases in the Meta data.

Long tail keywords are a type of keyword phrase that has at least three, and some times as many as five words in the phrase. Long tail keywords are used when the website wants to refine search terms to the web page, as well as when the searcher is looking for something rather specific. Like normal keywords, long tail keywords are used to define what is on the web page and what the publisher wants to be found under in search engines and on search engine results pages.
